Chip in Vegas

Fifty years of hard-won safety, gone on a single hand. What follows is the
climb back from the five-dollar tables with nothing but patience, a gold blazer, and a habit
of chasing the one big swing that ruined him.

Four Kings is where it begins. He is holding the second best hand a man can
hold, he knows exactly what it is worth, and for about nine seconds he is spending the money
in his head. Then the last card turns over.

Everything after that is the climb. There is no music in this one, and there is not supposed
to be.

The Three Acts
Act One

The Floor

The hand, the walk out at six in the morning, forty dollars in a diner booth, and a
five-dollar game in the worst room in town. He grinds it back twelve dollars at a time until
he can afford better lighting.

12 segments · about 18 minutes

Act Two

The Climb

Better carpet, old faces, a dog with a vet bill, and a man with a business card who can put
him in the big game for twenty thousand dollars that is not his. He runs good, which is the
most dangerous thing that can happen to him.

13 segments · about 21 minutes

Act Three

The Gold Jacket

The room he has been imagining since 1975, a hand as big as the one that finished him, and
the only decision in fifty years that is entirely his to make.

About that number. The odds at the end of segment one are real and they were
worked out properly, not guessed: four kings running into four aces heads up comes to one in
1,755,922,350. That is six times rarer than winning the Powerball. The lightning and shark
figures come from the National Weather Service and the International Shark Attack File.
