Instant games are the provably fair Originals a casino builds itself: Plinko, Mines, Dice, Limbo, Crash, Keno and Hi-Lo. They are also, collectively, the highest-returning category in the entire casino. Almost all of them run at 99%, a 1% house edge, against roughly 96% for a decent slot and as little as 50% for lounge keno. They get filed under “casual games” and treated as filler. On the maths they are the best thing in the building.
There is a strange inversion at the heart of the modern casino. The games with the best returns are the ones presented as throwaway: no reels, no host, no licensed brand, just a ball falling through pegs or a number climbing until you stop it. Meanwhile the slots with a 96% return get the front page and the marketing budget. What an instant game actually is
An instant game has three defining properties, and all three matter.
- The casino built it in-house. These are not licensed from a studio like Pragmatic or Hacksaw. Stake, Roobet, BC.Game, Shuffle and the rest each build their own, which is why they are called Originals.
- It resolves instantly. One decision, one outcome, seconds. No spin cycle, no dealer, no waiting for other players.
- It is provably fair. You can verify any individual round yourself with cryptography rather than trusting an auditor’s word, which is not true of a single slot in the world.
What that rules out is worth stating, because the category gets stretched. A slot is not an instant game, however fast it spins, because it is licensed from a studio and you cannot verify a spin. A live game show is not one either: Crazy Time has a host, a camera and a physical wheel, and it returns 96.08% at best. And a lottery-style scratch card is not one, despite looking similar, because you cannot check the result and the return is usually far worse.

The bottom three rows are there for scale. The gap between an instant game and a slot is about three points. The gap between an instant game and the keno you would find in a Las Vegas lounge is up to forty-nine.
Why they return 99%
This is the part that explains the whole category, and it is economics rather than generosity.
A licensed slot has a queue of people to pay before the player sees anything. The studio that built it takes a revenue share. The aggregator that distributes it takes a cut. The casino takes what is left. Three margins stacked on one game, and the return has to be set low enough to cover all of them.
An Original has exactly one party in the chain. The casino built it, hosts it and keeps everything, so it can set the edge at 1% and still make money, because at 1% the volume is enormous. These games are deliberately run close to break-even as a reason to open an account and stay in the lobby. You are the beneficiary of a customer-acquisition strategy, which is a perfectly good reason to take the 99%.
It also explains the availability problem. You cannot play Stake’s Originals anywhere except Stake, because there is nobody to license them from. Every crypto casino builds its own version, and the quality and the returns vary, which is why the room you pick matters as much as the game.
💡 Chip’s Tip
If you play slots and you have never tried the Originals shelf, run a session on Dice or Plinko and watch how much slower your balance moves. Three percentage points does not sound like much until you have played through it a few hundred times. The games look cheap because they cost the casino almost nothing to make, not because they are worth less to you.
The thing slots do not give you
Look at the right-hand column of the table again. Every instant game hands you a dial, and a slot hands you nothing but a bet size.
What is genuinely elegant is that the dial changes your volatility without changing your return. Dice makes this explicit: the payout is 99 divided by your win-chance percentage, so a 50% win chance pays 1.98x and a 1% win chance pays 99x, and the return is 99% at every single setting. Set the slider wherever you like and the maths does not move. Plinko does the same thing through risk levels and row counts. Mines does it through how many mines you place. Limbo does it through your target multiplier.
That is the opposite of how the rest of the casino works, where choosing a higher-variance option almost always costs you return. On a money wheel, backing the exciting segment means accepting a worse bet. On an instant game, you are picking a shape rather than paying for one. It is the most player-respecting design in the building and nobody advertises it.
How to actually verify a round
Provably fair is the other reason to take this category seriously, and it works on three values.
- The server seed is the casino’s secret number. It is published as a hash before you play, which commits the casino to it without revealing it.
- The client seed is yours, and you can change it whenever you like. This is the part that stops the casino precomputing your results.
- The nonce is a counter that increments with each round, so the same pair of seeds produces a different result every time.
After the fact the casino reveals the server seed. You re-run the combination yourself and either get the same outcome, in which case the round was fixed before you played it, or you have caught them. The caveat that always applies: this proves the result was not tampered with. It does not change the 1% house edge, and it does not mean you will win. Honest is not the same as generous. But on a game that is nothing except a random number and a payout table, honest is the only thing you were ever really trusting.
The honest problem with instant games
Everything above is the case for the category. Here is the case against, and it is not small.
These are the fastest games in the casino, and speed is what actually costs you. A slot spin takes a few seconds. A Limbo round takes one, and it is a single click you can hold down. A 1% edge met four hundred times an hour does more damage than a 4% edge met forty times, and the interface is built for exactly that repetition: one button, instant resolution, no animation to sit through.
So the 99% is real and it is also the most misleading number in the casino if you read it as safety. The correct way to think about an Original is that it is excellent value per round and potentially terrible value per hour, and which one you get is entirely down to how fast you click. Set a round count rather than a time limit, and use the auto-play controls to slow yourself down rather than speed yourself up.
